Barbecues at our house are rarely without a huge pitcher of Sangria floating around. Possibly two. There is something really satisfying about the combination of fresh fruit and good wine on a hot day. You know what else is good on a hot day, frozen stuff. Light bulb!!  This granita is refreshing and perfect for any warm summer evening.

sangranita

  • 1 1/2 cups red wine
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup
  • 1/4 lime juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 apples, sliced
  • handful of basil or mint
Place apples in bottom of a small pitcher. Muddle them and add remaining ingredients.  Chill as long as possible for the flavors to develop.  Overnight is preferable, but a few hours is fine. Strain through a fine mesh sieve and discard apples and basil.

Place in a shallow container and freeze.  Once frozen, scrape the frozen sangria mixture with a fork to make icy crystals.

Serve immediately.
